Author Stephen King will attend a virtual event hosted by UMass Lowell a few days before Halloween, the university announced. It’s free and open to the public, so anyone can tune in.
The prolific writer – known for “The Shining,” “It,” and “Carrie,” among dozens of titles – will join UMass Lowell English professor Andre Dubus III for an alumni book club discussion on Oct. 29, according to a statement from the university.
King, who is from Portland, Maine, is set to discuss his 2023 crime novel, “Holly,” with Dubus and answer questions from the virtual audience.

How and when to join UMass Lowell’s virtual event with Stephen King
The Andre Dubus III UMass Lowell Alumni Book Club event featuring King will be held virtually on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m., the university said. It’s set to last 90 minutes.
Those hoping to watch the Zoom session live can register for free online. However, space is limited, so the sooner you sign up, the better, according to UMass Lowell. The Zoom link will be sent your way before the event.
Attendees can also submit questions for King to answer during the discussion, the university noted.
This discussion will be the book club’s inaugural event.
What is “Holly” about?
“Holly” is a mystery novel that takes place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The protagonist detective, Holly, was first introduced in King’s “Mr. Mercedes” trilogy. In this 2023 book, the character decides to take on a missing person case while grieving the death of her mother.
King has wowed readers with his horror, crime, and thriller storylines over the decades. He sold his first professional short story in 1967, and since then has published more than 60 novels and novellas, UMass Lowell said.
“The great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy reminds us that ‘art is transferring feeling from one heart to another,’ and so who better to be our inaugural author guest than Stephen King, a writer who has moved (and horrified) millions and millions of readers in dozens of countries for decades,” Dubus said in a statement.
King last visited UMass Lowell in 2012 as a guest of the Chancellor’s Speaker Series.
