Local author events springing up in the area – InForum

As the season changes from winter to spring, several local authors will be visiting the metro with refreshing tales of love, adventure and friendship.

Author Leif Enger coming to Moorhead Library April 14

Author Leif Enger will visit the Moorhead Public Library to discuss his latest book, “I Cheerfully Refuse,” on April 14.

He will speak at 7 p.m. about his work and the novel, which is set in a dystopian version of America and follows a grieving musician who sails Lake Superior looking for his deceased wife.

The event is free and open to the public.

Ferguson Books hosting several author events in April

Downtown bookstore Ferguson Books is hosting several author events through April, beginning with Dr. D.S. Tselnik on Saturday, April 12. He will be discussing his new book, “Life of a Scientist: My Life in the USSR and the USA”, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tselnik was born and raised in the USSR and came to the United States in 1977 as a Jewish refugee.
 
Author Lisa Gurine visits Ferguson Books on Independent Bookstore Day to talk about her debut novel “Without Words.” She’ll be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. Her novel follows a young girl emigrating to America in the late 1800s who eventually settles in South Dakota and reflects on her life later as an older woman. The novel was inspired by stories her parents and grandparents shared.

A few days later, Bill Thorness will read from his book “All Roads Lead to Rome: Searching for the End of My Father’s War” at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, with a Q & A portion and book signing to follow. The book details his journey to retrace his father’s World War II experience through recreated war scenes and his own travels.

Kids and campfires highlighted in May

Ferguson Books will celebrate Children’s Book Week May 5-11 with a visit from Grand Forks author Robert Vigil who will share his debut book, “The Value of Zero.” Little Zero is being bullied at school by the other numbers who say he has no value but he eventually makes a friend who helps him see his own worth. Vigil will be at the bookstore from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 10.

On May 17, Darrell Pedersen will share stories from his award-winning memoir, “Campfire in the Basement: Reflections from a Northwoods Lake.” Pedersen shares colorful stories from his family’s history as well as insight from his life, and the book earned the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award 2024 Best Memoir last year for his wit and warmth, according to the organization. He will be at Ferguson from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Danielle Teigen has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and management communication as well as a master’s degree in mass communication from North Dakota State University. She has worked for Forum Communications since May 2015 and is the author of two non-fiction history books.
